But its software department is well below par. I can honestly say Netgear hardware specs are reasonably good on those that I tested including R7000 and Orbi. I have done nearly 20 flashings at this point! I am also a Beta tester for several of Netgear products. I acquired a non-working and cheap Netgear R8500-NAS (made in Vietnam, 272-12473-02). I do hope we gain a better collective understanding of R8500 in the end. I'd like to share my experience in attempting to debrick Netgear R8500 in this thread. In particular, KONG for his works on this router and on others such as R7000. It was a big letdown to realize I bought a variant with no support.Posted: Mon 3:59 Post subject: The DEBRICKING of Netgear R8500įirstly, I thank you many for your contributions.

These should be great pieces of equipment with DD-WRT. Hoping if enough of us show a need and donate, there will be support. I know, that's why I subscribed to this and the other topic.

The MP2 version of R8500 does not work with Kong's build.

I am currently hooked up serially to confirm output matches everyone elses while flashing Kong's build. I'm stuck with an R8500 272-12473-02 from Vietnam as well. I also have a router netgear R8500, made in Vietnam, and it is impossible to update with any dd-wrt firmware (an error message says that the firmware is not compatible). Posted: Tue 11:42 Post subject: netgear r8500 This is definitely a great first step (atleast for me). Now i need to find/follow right steps and sequence to debrick the router. I used your input to open up the hidden screws and now i am able to open the hood to access TTL. You can insulate the VCC wire then you are safe to use this. The cheapest way is to get the old Nokia cellphone usb data cable which you can get it from mobile phone spare shops for $1 apiece.Ĭonnect it to your laptop if it is recognize as PL2303 chip then you are fine.Ĭutoff the Nokia connector side and identify the vcc, Gnd Rx and Tx. IF you are into some tech hobby then you can make USB-TTL adapter. Many people have used the one below and confirmed to be working: Posted: Mon 16:42 Post For the USB-TTL adapter cable, the one you mentioned seems to be a 5V one so no good. Once you removed these four screws, raise the small plastic cover covering the USB ports then slide out the base cover. That way it is easier to stick it back in place. Slightly open from one corner (don't strip off completely) and you can remove the screw when it is exposed halfway trough. You need to remove four more screws underneath base rubber grip which Is of black color and in square shape. Please let me know if it is compatible to push the firmware from a laptop into this router? Any guidance on the steps or pointing to an existing youtube article would be great.īy the way, i have this USB-TTL to connect to this router. It had 2 screws and i removed them and trying to access the motherboard, but with not successful.
